We'll see how Brown takes this... maybe he'll acquiesce like Marleau did. Maybe it'll light a fire that may rekindle his career. Maybe he'll accept a trade. |

Nobody is taking on the remainder of Brown's contract. At this point his contract is easily one of the top five worst contracts in the league.
A. What else would LA add to deal Brown?
and/or
B. How much would LA retain?
Kopitar will make a great Captain.

There is no worse contract in the league. Even half retained is still fairly...unfortunate. too bad on the length. If it was 2 yrs left and they retained half there would be takers. |

I don't think any club will take a full portion of Brown's contract, but there may be takers if the Kings eat a portion of it..
He just turned 31, still can skate, and if he gets regular top 6 minutes and PP opportunities he could be a 40-45 point scorer for a young, up and coming team who could use some veteran leadership (eg his home town Buffalo). |

This agreement is on DL and I hope he chokes on it. Brown is still a valuable player and in the right setting he can easily regain his 20 goal seasons. Unfortunately, he is now stuck with a contract similar to what Luongo was stuck with. The sad part is that DL negotiated this without an agent to represent Brown, which makes DL look like a friggin idiot. Look at Brown's statement to NHL.com after signing the agreement:
"Going into this, I did my homework and did comparisons and received help from the [NHL] Players' Association on some numbers and stats," Brown said on a conference call. "I realized in a [salary] cap era that there's only so much money to go around, and with the cap going down this year and not having that certainty what it will be next year, there's an opportunity to keep this team together. That was part of my decision in wanting to stay because I believe we have a chance to win."
DL's response?
"Now it was just a matter of coming to a fair number. But Dustin understood the cap implications. It wasn't about getting as much as he could, but about getting a fair contract that would allow us to win for many years."

I think this was the obvious choice. Drew still can't really control his temper. Much less lead the team. Kopi has the attitude and poise. But can his play keep up? Its been streaky in the past. Can he handle the pressure of leading us to our 3rd cup? We'll see.. However.. if this team is "Kopi's and Drew's" now, then we are in good hands. I wouldn't want any other players leading the way, and 8, 11 are great for the younger kids to look up too.
I really thing the "C" is sometimes more of a figurehead thing anyway, nothing has changed internally, the players who have lead before or haven't will lead again or wont. We still have one of the better locker room's in the league. But I think the team has been Kopitar's and Doughty's for a while now. |

This column will be Kopitar's contract in 6 years?
Brown could be in Bickell country with more term.
Gaborik will continue to need "time off" during his next 6 years (he's 34 today). They may want to look at not locking guys up until there mid to late 30's and hang on to some 1st round picks from now on.
All that said, Kings should be able to make another run next year, and year after. but from there on the prospect pool is not good at all

In all seriousness the hole he left in our defense really (frank)ed us up. We still haven't been able to bounce back, and every other aspect of the team has suffered as a result. |

Kopitar named captain(deservedly so) and they will not buy out Brown? Maybe not this year(give him a chance to redeem himself)
Hopefully the locker room is screwed up with this move. Weird seeing a guy stripped of the captaincy and him still being on the team(though it worked out for San Jose this year) |

Does Buffalo have enough cap space. With Kane and O'reilly that takes up a bunch then add the young guys they have drafted over the last few seasons, it might start to catch up with them. |

This year was definitely a disappointment for the Kings. What do you guys need going into free agency? How much cap is left? How the heck are you going to get rid of Brown? That's an albatross of a contract. |

Youre putting a real nice shine on that turd. No one wants that deal. Kings could eat money and the term is still killer. The thought of being stuck with Brown for six more years is horrifying. |
